Chennai, Jan 22 (NationPress) As the election for six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu approaches on April 6, the political atmosphere is heating up, with major parties and their allies strategizing to gain a foothold in the Upper House.

The ruling DMK is in a strong numerical position, while the opposition AIADMK is relying on alliance calculations. This contest has sparked new negotiations, bargaining, and strategic realignments across the state's political landscape.

Out of the six seats that are becoming vacant, four are currently held by the DMK and two by the AIADMK.

For the DMK, the terms of Tiruchi Siva, N.R. Elango, P. Selvarasu, and Kanimozhi N.V.N. Somu are nearing their end. Given their comfortable majority in the Assembly, the DMK-led coalition is anticipated to retain all four seats. However, internal lobbying is escalating, with allies also asserting their claims, viewing Rajya Sabha positions as leverage for securing more Assembly seats before the 2026 elections.

According to party insiders, N.R. Elango’s renomination is confirmed, while a decision regarding Tiruchi Siva is still pending. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to make a strategic call on the remaining two seats to accommodate allies.

The DMDK has consistently reiterated its demand for a Rajya Sabha seat, while political analysts suggest that the Congress could also make a claim as part of broader alliance discussions.

On the other side, the AIADMK is facing a more challenging arithmetic. The Rajya Sabha terms of senior leader M. Thambidurai and G.K. Vasan, head of the Tamil Maanila Congress, are concluding. Despite losing three MLAs recently, AIADMK leaders are confident of retaining both seats with the support of their National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners.

The AIADMK needs 34 MLAs to elect one member to the Rajya Sabha. Given their reduced strength, they are counting on votes from the BJP MLAs and the faction led by PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss.

“The recent resignations do not jeopardize our seats as long as the NDA remains united on polling day,” stated AIADMK Deputy General Secretary Vaigaichelvan.

A senior DMK representative indicated that the final seat allocation would be determined soon, taking into account both organizational priorities and alliance needs. “The leadership will adopt a comprehensive view. The Chief Minister will decide whether all the seats should go to party leaders or if some should be utilized to strengthen alliances,” the leader noted, suggesting that the Rajya Sabha elections could significantly influence political alignments ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
