Patna, July 2 (NationPress) The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is proving to be highly beneficial for countless individuals involved in the fisheries sector, as well as for new start-ups that have recently embraced fish farming as a viable profession. This initiative has significantly penetrated the state, thanks to the fishermen's cooperative model.
Across various regions, numerous societies have united for fish farming under the Fishermen's Cooperative Society, with their products now being exported from Bihar to Punjab and Bengal.
In an interview with IANS, Bhagalpur fisheries officer Krishna Kanhaiya revealed that 150 farmers have enrolled in the scheme and are reaping its rewards.
According to District Fisheries Officer Krishna Kanhaiya, approximately 635 fisheries societies in Bhagalpur are registered on the National Fisheries Digital Platform, with the Central government providing financial aid ranging from Rs 90,000 to Rs 1 crore.
In addition to Bhagalpur, many farmers from regions such as Kahalgaon, Bihpur, Narayanpur, Naugachhia, Shahkund, and Gora Dih are showing interest in fish farming, eager to seize the growth opportunities.
The revitalization of ponds and water bodies under the state's Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission has further propelled this initiative. The renovation has led to a surge in the construction of new ponds and feed mills.
A few fish farming entrepreneurs shared their insights with IANS regarding the evolving fishing industry in the state.
Saurabh Kumar, a Bihpur block resident, left his job after completing his B.Tech and MBA to launch a fishing business with government backing. He received Rs 40 lakh under PMMSY and established his own enterprise, now providing employment to many local residents.
Fish farmer Shailendra Mahato from Raghopur Bindtoli mentioned that he received Rs 9.71 lakh in assistance to start his own venture.
Fish producer Abhishek noted that the market, previously dominated by mafias, has undergone significant changes.
Amarendra Nishad from Gonarchak Parbatta village stated that the government scheme has ushered in prosperity for the community.
Vinod Sahni expressed satisfaction that his child will not have to seek work elsewhere, emphasizing that this initiative will help reduce migration.
Launched to foster the Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible fisheries development, PMMSY is backed by an estimated investment of Rs 20,050 crore for comprehensive growth in the fisheries sector, including the welfare of fishers.
