Kolkata, Nov 27 (NationPress) A Trinamool Congress worker tragically lost his life in the Kaliachak region of Malda district, West Bengal, on Thursday due to a kangaroo court set up by local panchayat members associated with the ruling party.

The victim has been identified as Ekramul Sheikh, aged 45.

As per local reports, a disagreement arose between Trinamool Congress booth President Shamsul Sheikh and Ekramul regarding the operation of a tractor on Shamsul's agricultural land.

When the situation escalated, they sought intervention from the local police.

However, Ekramul's family claims that their complaint was not registered.

Following this, Muktar Sheikh, spouse of a local Trinamool Congress member of the Rajnagar Gram Panchayat, called for a kangaroo court to mediate the issue.

During this court session, Shamsul was ordered to perform sit-ups while holding his ears as punishment.

Unable to accept the ruling, he attacked Ekramul with a sharp object in front of witnesses.

In the chaos, several others were injured while attempting to assist Ekramul.

Ekramul was rushed to Malda Medical College Hospital in critical condition, but the medical staff declared him dead upon arrival.

The remaining injured individuals are currently receiving care at the hospital.

Ekramul's family is demanding severe consequences for the perpetrator.

Malda Superintendent of Police, Pradeep Kumar Yadav, reported that a significant police presence, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Faisal Raja and Kaliachak Police Station Inspector Suman Chowdhury, responded to the incident.

Yadav noted, "Police are still positioned in the area. An investigation is underway."

The BJP has criticized the Trinamool Congress for the apparent lawlessness in the region.

Malda District BJP General Secretary Biswajit Roy stated, "Since the Trinamool Congress assumed power, the police have neglected their responsibilities. Instead of a police station, a kangaroo court was summoned to address local disputes. We denounce this event."

On the other hand, Malda District Trinamool Congress General Secretary Biswajit Ghosh dismissed claims of party infighting as the cause of the incident.

"This was merely a familial disagreement, unrelated to politics. The BJP constantly tries to associate the Trinamool Congress with such incidents, which is unacceptable. The police will assuredly take appropriate action," asserted the local Trinamool leader.

Point of View

This incident reflects poorly on governance and the rule of law in West Bengal. The tragic death of Ekramul Sheikh highlights the urgent need for political accountability and effective policing. As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial that justice is served to restore public faith in the system.
