New Delhi, Oct 7 (NationPress) The swift adoption of AI technologies in India is transforming various user sectors, altering competition dynamics, business operations, and the regulatory landscape, as highlighted in a recent study by the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
While the rise of AI brings significant advantages in areas such as efficiency, innovation, and customer experience, the study points out several emerging challenges that could impact competition and potentially impede the realization of AI's full potential.
The research meticulously examined these facets while also reviewing the evolution of legal and regulatory frameworks in India and other regions to adapt to the rapid growth of AI.
Titled ‘Market Study on Artificial Intelligence and Competition’, the report was conducted in collaboration with the Management Development Institute Society (MDIS). It aimed to comprehend AI markets and ecosystems, identify emerging and potential competition issues, and assess current and evolving regulatory frameworks that govern AI systems.
This study utilized a combination of secondary and primary research techniques, including literature reviews, database analysis, semi-structured and structured interviews, as well as stakeholder surveys to deliver a comprehensive understanding of its various objectives.
According to the CCI, “The study has provided valuable insights into the structure of the AI ecosystem, market trends, the application of AI across user industries, potential competition concerns within the AI industry and user sectors, and other pertinent aspects.”
To foster a competitive AI ecosystem in India, mitigate AI-driven anti-competitive practices, and safeguard consumer welfare, the report recommends several measures.
In line with this, the CCI plans to host a conference on “AI and regulatory issues” in partnership with relevant stakeholders; conduct targeted advocacy workshops on “AI and Competition Compliance”; enhance its technical capabilities and infrastructure; establish a think tank focused on digital market expertise, particularly pertaining to AI; promote inter-regulatory collaboration, and engage with international competition authorities and multilateral competition platforms.
To ensure responsible autonomy while safeguarding markets from distortions, businesses are encouraged to implement self-audits of AI systems for competition compliance, enabling them to proactively identify and address potential competition issues. Additionally, the adoption of transparency measures is advised to diminish information asymmetry.
