Apple Achieves Over 60% Reduction in Global GHG Emissions

Synopsis

Apple has proudly announced a remarkable achievement of over 60% reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2015 levels. This milestone is part of its ambitious goal to become carbon neutral across its entire operations by 2030. The company also highlights significant use of recycled materials and renewable energy in its production processes.

Key Takeaways

  • Apple achieved a 60% reduction in GHG emissions.
  • Aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030.
  • Utilizing 99% recycled materials in production.
  • 17.8 gigawatts of renewable energy in supply chain.
  • 26 semiconductor suppliers committed to 90% reduction of F-GHGs.

Cupertino, (California), April 16 (NationPress) Apple has proudly reported that it has achieved more than a 60 percent reduction in its global greenhouse gas emissions since 2015, aligning with its ambitious goal to reach carbon neutrality across its entire operations by 2030.

In addition to this milestone, the company has reached other significant environmental achievements, such as incorporating 99 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 99 percent recycled cobalt in all batteries designed by Apple.

“We are immensely proud of the advancements we are making towards Apple 2030, which influences every facet of our operations,” stated Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives.

“Currently, we are utilizing more clean energy and recycled materials than ever to manufacture our products, conserving water, minimizing waste globally, and making substantial investments in nature. As we approach 2030, the challenges intensify, yet we are tackling them with innovation and urgency,” Jackson remarked.

Apple’s 2030 strategy focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent from its 2015 baseline, followed by utilizing high-quality carbon credits to offset remaining emissions.

Last year, Apple’s extensive measures to lower its carbon footprint—such as transitioning its supply chain to renewable electricity and designing products with greater recycled materials—resulted in an estimated reduction of 41 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

As Apple commemorates Earth Day with its teams, partners, and customers worldwide, including a special initiative for users who recycle their devices, it highlights the significant strides made in its environmental initiatives.

Currently, there are 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity available in Apple’s global supply chain, attributed to the company’s enduring partnership with suppliers to transition to 100 percent renewable energy for their production by 2030.

The renewable energy acquired by Apple suppliers avoided 21.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2024, marking over a 17 percent increase from the previous year. Furthermore, suppliers successfully prevented nearly 2 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions last year through energy efficiency improvements in collaboration with Apple.

Beyond transitioning suppliers to clean energy, Apple is actively addressing the direct climate impact of industrial processes across its supply chain. This encompasses the production of semiconductors and flat-panel displays, both of which release powerful fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-GHGs).

Apple revealed that 26 of its direct semiconductor suppliers have pledged to eliminate at least 90 percent of F-GHGs from their facilities involved in Apple-related production by 2030.

Many of these facilities also cater to additional clients, amplifying this positive impact beyond Apple.

Moreover, 100 percent of the company’s direct display suppliers have made the same commitment. In 2024, display and semiconductor suppliers collectively reduced 8.4 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, and the new commitments are set to expedite this progress in the coming years.

“On April 22, Apple Watch users can earn a limited-edition Earth Day award by completing any workout lasting 30 minutes or more, promoting outdoor activity and fitness,” the company announced.
