Cupertino (California), Dec 2 (NationPress) Apple has revealed the appointment of esteemed AI researcher Amar Subramanya as vice president of AI, who will report directly to Craig Federighi.

The announcement comes as John Giannandrea, the senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy at Apple, transitions to an advisory role before his retirement in spring 2026.

“Subramanya will oversee pivotal areas such as Apple Foundation Models, ML research, and AI Safety and Evaluation. The remaining parts of Giannandrea’s organization will be reassigned under Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue to better align with related teams,” Apple stated.

Bringing a wealth of experience, Subramanya previously served as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft and spent 16 years at Google, where he was the head of engineering for Google’s Gemini Assistant.

His extensive knowledge in both AI and ML research, as well as in the application of this research into products, will be crucial for Apple’s ongoing innovation and the development of future Apple Intelligence features, the company remarked.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, expressed gratitude for Giannandrea’s contributions to the advancement of their AI initiatives, stating, “We appreciate the role John played in enhancing our AI capabilities, which has allowed Apple to continue to innovate and improve user experience.”

AI has long been a cornerstone of Apple’s strategy, and “we are thrilled to include Amar in Craig’s leadership team to leverage his exceptional AI skills,” Cook added.

In addition to expanding his leadership team and responsibilities, Cook noted that Craig has been crucial in steering Apple’s AI initiatives, particularly the effort to enhance Siri’s personalization for users in the upcoming year.

Since joining Apple in 2018, Giannandrea has been instrumental in shaping the company’s approach to AI and ML, assembling a world-class team dedicated to developing essential AI technologies.

This team currently manages Apple Foundation Models, Search and Knowledge, ML Research, and AI Infrastructure.

With Giannandrea’s foundational contributions, Federighi’s extended oversight, and Subramanya’s profound expertise, Apple is well-positioned to accelerate advancements in delivering intelligent, reliable, and deeply personalized experiences.
