New Delhi, Sep 16 (NationPress) In a surprising move, tech behemoth Google has laid off over 200 contractors engaged in its artificial intelligence initiatives, which notably include Gemini and AI Overviews. This decision has sparked worries about job security, low wages, and potential backlash against efforts for unionization.

As reported by WIRED, these layoffs occurred in at least two discrete rounds last month, often with little to no prior notification. Numerous contractors expressed that they were abruptly severed from their roles.

“I was just cut off,” stated Andrew Lauzon, a contractor who received an email on August 15 indicating the conclusion of his contract.

Lauzon, who began working with Hitachi-owned GlobalLogic in March 2024, was involved in training Google's Gemini chatbot and other AI tools.

“When I inquired about the reason, they cited a ramp-down on the project -- whatever that entails. How are we expected to feel secure in our roles when we know we could be let go at any moment?” he remarked.

The contractors, many holding advanced degrees such as master’s and PhDs, were part of a team referred to as “super raters.”

They played a pivotal role in refining AI-generated responses, ensuring they sounded more natural and precise.

Workers informed WIRED that their contributions were essential in shaping Google’s AI offerings, including the AI Overviews feature that summarizes search results.

“We, as raters, are incredibly vital,” said Alex, a generalist rater from GlobalLogic.

“Engineers won’t have the bandwidth to fine-tune and gather the feedback they need for the bot. We’re akin to lifeguards on the beach -- ensuring nothing goes awry,” Alex added.

Google has reportedly distanced itself from direct accountability for the layoffs, emphasizing that the affected individuals were employed by GlobalLogic or its subcontractors.

“These individuals are employees of GlobalLogic or their subcontractors, not Alphabet,” stated Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini.

“As the employers, GlobalLogic and their subcontractors bear the responsibility for the employment and working conditions of their staff,” Mencini further added.

These reported job cuts emerge at a time when Google is heavily investing in AI to stay competitive with rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft.

Point of View

I believe that the recent layoffs at Google highlight a troubling trend in the tech industry. While companies strive for innovation, they must also consider the welfare of their employees. The voices of these contractors, who play crucial roles in shaping AI, should not be overlooked. We must advocate for fair treatment and job security in this rapidly evolving landscape.
