The highest number of direct jobs were generated in the IT sector (204,119), followed by healthcare and life sciences (147,639), and professional and commercial services (94,060), as stated by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, during a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

Additionally, startups focusing on education (90,414), human resources (87,983), construction (88,702), food and beverages (88,468), agriculture (83,307), and artificial intelligence (23,918) are significant contributors to job creation, according to data from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

Currently, India boasts over 146,000 DPIIT-recognised startups and more than 100 unicorns.

As part of the Startup India initiative, the government is actively engaged in various initiatives aimed at fostering the development and expansion of the startup ecosystem, thereby enhancing job opportunities in the nation, stated the minister.

Key programmes include the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS), which provide support to startups at different stages of their business journey.

The minister also mentioned that the government conducts periodic assessments and programmes such as the States’ Startup Ranking, National Startup Awards, and Innovation Week, which significantly contribute to the comprehensive development of the startup ecosystem.

Digital platforms like the Startup India Hub portal and the Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) facilitate easy access to resources and promote collaboration within the startup ecosystem. These initiatives are further bolstered by regulatory reforms and other developmental events.

Moreover, the government has introduced the ‘Startup India Hub’ portal, which serves as a resource for stakeholders in the entrepreneurial ecosystem of India, allowing them to discover various benefits and information related to the ‘Startup India’ initiative.

Additionally, the Centre has rolled out the BHASKAR platform, aimed at centralising and enhancing collaboration among key stakeholders within the entrepreneurial ecosystem, thereby connecting startups and entrepreneurs from non-metro cities and regions with the broader startup landscape.
