New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) In an ongoing effort to attain self-sufficiency in critical minerals, Minister of State for Coal, Satish Chandra Dubey, stated on Wednesday that the government is dedicated to fostering innovation within this sector.
This announcement was made during the inauguration of a new Research & Innovation Centre located in Noida, established by the Uttar Pradesh-based critical minerals producer, Lohum.
“The Government is firmly committed to enhancing innovation in the critical minerals domain, and this new research facility marks a significant advancement in that direction. It is essential for expediting India’s journey towards mineral independence and sustainable energy,” declared the Minister.
At this facility, the company’s researchers are engaged in cutting-edge studies on 15 out of the 27 critical minerals identified by the Government of India, including cobalt, nickel, lithium, graphite, aluminium, copper, and rare earth elements, according to a company release.
In line with the government’s National Critical Mineral Mission, the innovation centre seeks to promote research and innovation across a value chain crucial for the nation’s economy, energy security, and technological prowess, the release added.
The centre boasts numerous laboratories focusing on rare earth elements, magnets, batteries, cathode active materials, membranes, coin cells, and carbon, nickel-lithium-cobalt, among others.
Lohum allocates 5% of its annual revenue and 10% of its workforce to research and development, as noted by the company. A dedicated team of over 100 scientists is working to expand knowledge and deliver market-ready solutions for a circular economy in critical minerals.
“This enhanced and state-of-the-art Research & Innovation Center is the driving force behind Lohum’s vision of establishing world-class capabilities in critical minerals manufacturing. We take pride in contributing to India’s quest to become a global technology leader, as this technological advancement starts with rigorous R&D in critical minerals,” said Rajat Verma, Founder & CEO of Lohum.
On Tuesday, the coal ministry informed Parliament that restrictions imposed by China on essential rare earth magnets are adversely affecting Indian industries, including electric vehicle manufacturers.
