Mumbai, Jan 28 (NationPress) India’s defence technology sector has achieved a remarkable funding milestone of $247 million in 2025, marking its highest annual investment to date, even though the total number of deals has decreased, according to a report released on Wednesday.

The analysis from the data intelligence platform Tracxn revealed that the cumulative equity funding for this sector has reached $711 million across 232 rounds. Funding has surged from a mere $5 million in 2016 to this peak of $247 million in 2025.

According to the report, this growth was primarily fueled by a $100 million mega round, with a significant focus on non-combat systems and a concentration of capital among a limited number of firms.

Despite a reduction in the number of funding rounds to 30 in 2025, the overall funding has nearly doubled year-over-year, thanks to that substantial $100 million round.

The report noted, "While seed-stage activity remains broad, late-stage funding continues to be constrained, highlighting the ecosystem's shift toward execution-oriented and platform-driven defence capabilities."

Funding patterns reveal a strong bias towards initial stages, with seed-stage companies raising about $118 million across 174 rounds, early-stage firms attracting $527 million over 56 rounds, and late-stage funding totaling $66 million in just five rounds.

The distribution of capital across the defence technology value chain shows a pronounced skew towards infrastructure-related segments. Non-Combat Systems attracted $551 million, Combat Weapon Systems received $106 million, Defence Support and Enablement Systems gained $27 million, and Training and Simulation Solutions also garnered $27 million, according to the report.

Bengaluru has emerged as the leading city for funding, securing $216 million across 61 rounds, followed by Noida with $168 million over 19 rounds and Chennai with $88 million across 26 rounds.

The landscape of India's defence technology ecosystem has shifted from fragmented innovation to a focus on execution-driven capabilities. Defence technology now encompasses integrated systems that include AI, autonomy, ISR, secure communications, and manufacturing strength, as highlighted by the data intelligence platform.

Policy reforms, increased defence budgets, and geopolitical factors are positioning defence technology as a vital component of national infrastructure, interlinking military readiness with industrial capacity and long-term economic advantages, the report noted.
