India IPO market hits record ₹2.23 lakh crore in Samvat 2082, 375 issues
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's primary capital market set an all-time fundraising record in Samvat 2082, mobilising ₹2.23 lakh crore across 375 mainboard and SME initial public offerings (IPOs) between 21 October 2025 and 6 November 2026, with 230 issues listing above their offer prices. The milestone underscores sustained retail and institutional appetite for new listings despite global market volatility.
Mainboard IPOs Post All-Time High
Mainboard IPOs alone raised a record ₹2.12 lakh crore through 131 issues, marking a 19.6% jump from ₹1.78 lakh crore mobilised via 104 issues in the previous Samvat year. Fresh capital issuance within the mainboard segment surged 42% to ₹1 lakh crore, up from ₹70,641 crore, while offer-for-sale (OFS) proceeds rose a more modest 4.8% to ₹1.12 lakh crore.
The top three mainboard issues collectively raised ₹63,353 crore, accounting for 29.8% of total mainboard fundraising. Financial services and investments emerged as the dominant sector, contributing ₹60,781 crore across 14 issues — representing 28.6% of total capital raised in the segment.
Listing Performance and Investor Returns
Of the 131 mainboard issues, 89 closed above their issue price on listing day. The median listing-day gain stood at 6.8%. As of 6 November 2026, 87 mainboard issues were trading above their offer price on an adjusted basis, while 43 were below it. The median return from offer price was 16.8%.
Among the 42 issues sized at ₹1,000 crore or more, 34 were trading above their offer price — a hit rate of over 80% in the larger-ticket segment, suggesting that quality-focused selection continued to reward investors.
SME IPO Segment: Growth With Caution
244 SME issues raised ₹10,826 crore, a 4% rise from ₹10,407 crore raised by 240 issues in the previous Samvat. However, the SME segment showed a more mixed picture: OFS within the segment fell 40.6% to ₹628 crore, or 5.8% of total SME fundraising. While 141 SME issues closed above their issue price on listing day, only 114 remained above their offer price as of 6 November 2026. The median return for SME IPOs was a loss of 3.9% — a notable contrast to the mainboard performance and a signal of heightened risk in the smaller-company segment.
Market Quality and What Analysts Are Watching
Analysts noted that the market is increasingly differentiating between companies based on earnings visibility, cash-flow conversion, balance-sheet quality, governance, and valuation. This maturation in investor behaviour marks a shift from the indiscriminate listing-day frenzy seen in prior cycles. Notably, the strong fresh capital issuance — as opposed to OFS — indicates that more companies are using the IPO route to build rather than merely exit.
Pipeline Remains Robust for Samvat 2083
The IPO pipeline heading into Samvat 2083 — which begins with Diwali — is expected to stay strong. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) approved five IPOs this week alone, signalling continued regulatory momentum. If macroeconomic conditions hold and global risk appetite remains supportive, analysts expect the record set in Samvat 2082 to face a credible challenge in the year ahead.
