Maruti Suzuki Chairman: Osamu Suzuki Had an Exceptional Connection with PM Modi

New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) Osamu Suzuki, who passed away at the age of 93, was a visionary leader whose significant contributions transformed the global automobile industry, especially in India where he maintained a strong relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the automaker reported on Friday.

Osamu led Suzuki Motor Corp for over 40 years, revolutionizing India’s automotive market with the launch of the widely acclaimed Maruti 800 small car.

During his visit to Japan last year, PM Modi engaged with Osamu Suzuki to explore potential investment opportunities in India, including establishing production facilities for electric vehicles and batteries, along with recycling centers, aimed at achieving sustainable growth.

The two leaders also deliberated on strategies to enhance the local innovation ecosystem in India, focusing on skill development through the Japan-India Institutes of Manufacturing (JIM) and Japanese Endowed Courses (JEC). Modi acknowledged Suzuki's significant role and contributions in India, commending the transformative impact of Suzuki Motors on the nation's automotive sector.

“The reforms initiated by PM Modi are unparalleled, and these changes are propelling India toward a 'Model Landscape', while the theme of self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar) is strongly supported by Japanese investors,” Osamu remarked.

As stated by the company, Osamu’s foresight and leadership were critical in the establishment of Maruti Udyog Limited in 1981.

“Thanks to his vision, Osamu Suzuki was pivotal in realizing the dream of mobilizing India, empowering countless Indian families with affordable, reliable, efficient, and high-quality vehicles,” noted the leading automaker.

Under his guidance, the Indian automobile sector embraced Japanese manufacturing techniques and work practices recognized globally for their teamwork, productivity, and cost-effectiveness.

R.C. Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, stated that without Osamu's vision, willingness to take risks no one else would, profound affection for India, and exceptional teaching abilities, “I believe the Indian automobile industry could not have evolved into the powerhouse it is today.”

“Millions in this country enjoy improved lives thanks to Osamu. He earned and maintained the trust of several Prime Ministers. He had a particularly close relationship with the current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi,” Bhargava added.

Osamu’s influence on the Indian economy and his efforts in bridging the gap between India and Japan were recognized with the Padma Bhushan award.

Having served for over 28 years as president, he became the longest-serving leader of a global automaker. After resigning from the presidency in 2000, he took on the roles of Chairman and CEO of Suzuki Motor. He resumed the presidency at the age of 78 in December 2008, amid a global recession and an anticipated profit decline, to lead the company through challenging times.
