San Francisco, July 2 (NationPress) In a significant move, Microsoft is set to reduce its workforce by approximately 4 percent, translating to around 9,000 employees in yet another wave of job cuts this year, as reported on Wednesday.
The Seattle Times indicates that the Xbox division, also known as Microsoft Gaming, will experience considerable impact from these layoffs.
Xbox leader Phil Spencer communicated to his team, “To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft’s lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness.”
These recent layoffs come merely two months after Microsoft announced the termination of over 6,000 employees, followed by an additional 305 reductions in early June.
Earlier this year, Microsoft laid off 1,900 employees from Activision Blizzard and Xbox in January, alongside multiple game studio closures and job losses in May, as well as 1,000 job losses from its HoloLens and Azure cloud teams in June.
Moreover, Microsoft let go of an additional 650 Xbox employees in September, part of a restructuring tied to the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, according to reports from The Verge.
Phil Spencer stated, “These changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before.”
Spencer added, “Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we’re currently experiencing is rooted in the difficult decisions we've made previously. We must make choices now for continued success in future years, and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities.”
“We will protect what is thriving and concentrate our efforts on areas with the greatest potential, while fulfilling the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach allows us to deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come,” he concluded.
