New Delhi, Nov 26 (NationPress) The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers associated with deceased individuals. This action is part of a comprehensive initiative aimed at maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the Aadhaar database, as stated by the Ministry of Electronics & IT on Wednesday.
The UIDAI emphasized that this clean-up operation is crucial in preventing identity fraud and curbing the misuse of Aadhaar numbers intended for welfare benefits.
To identify the deceased, UIDAI has obtained data from various sources, including the Registrar General of India (RGI), state governments, Union Territories, the Public Distribution System, and the National Social Assistance Programme.
Additionally, UIDAI plans to collaborate with banks and other financial institutions to gather similar data in the future.
The authority made it clear that Aadhaar numbers are never reassigned. Once an individual passes away, their Aadhaar number must be deactivated to prevent illegal use.
Earlier this year, UIDAI introduced a feature called “Reporting of death of a family member” on the myAadhaar portal.
This feature is currently accessible in 25 states and Union Territories that utilize the Civil Registration System.
UIDAI is making efforts to integrate the remaining states and UTs,” the authority stated.
To report a death, a family member must authenticate themselves on the portal and provide the Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and other basic details of the deceased.
UIDAI will review the submitted data, and following verification, will proceed with the deactivation of the Aadhaar number.
UIDAI encourages Aadhaar holders to report the deaths of their family members on the myAadhaar portal after acquiring the official death certificate.
This initiative, the authority noted, will contribute to a more accurate and fraud-resistant Aadhaar database nationally.
