Vedanta Q1 FY27 profit drops 18% to ₹5,473 crore; property business demerger approved
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vedanta Limited on Thursday, 30 July 2026, reported an 18 per cent sequential decline in consolidated net profit to ₹5,473 crore for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 (Q1 FY27), as surging input costs offset strong operational gains across its zinc, copper, and silver segments. The company had posted a net profit of ₹6,698 crore in the preceding January–March quarter.
Revenue and Cost Pressures
Revenue from operations slipped marginally by 1 per cent on a sequential basis to ₹23,456 crore, down from ₹23,731 crore in Q4 FY26. The cost of raw materials consumed surged 37 per cent, pushing total expenses up 33 per cent to ₹17,558 crore, according to the company's stock exchange filing.
Despite the sequential squeeze, Vedanta's year-on-year performance told a markedly different story. Net profit margins expanded to 22 per cent in Q1 FY27, up from 12 per cent in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year — a near-doubling that underscores the structural improvement in the company's earnings base.
Strong Segment Performance
Vedanta's core business segments delivered robust top-line growth. Revenue from the combined India zinc and lead business rose nearly 50 per cent, while the copper segment recorded a 34 per cent increase in revenue. The India silver business outperformed all segments, with revenue more than doubling during the quarter.
The results arrive on the back of a strong earnings run across the Vedanta Group. Last week, Hindustan Zinc reported that its quarterly profit more than doubled, supported by firm metal prices. Earlier on Thursday, Vedanta Aluminium Metal — the pure-play aluminium entity created following Vedanta's earlier demerger — posted a more than three-fold jump in profit on the back of higher aluminium prices.
Leadership Changes at the Top
The board approved the re-appointment of Arun Misra as Executive Director, designating him as Chief Executive Officer for a one-year term beginning 1 August 2026, subject to shareholders' approval. Misra currently heads Hindustan Zinc and will step down from that role to assume his new responsibilities at Vedanta.
Property Business Demerger
In a significant strategic move, Vedanta's board approved the demerger of its real estate business into a separate entity to be called Vedanta Property Platforms Ltd. The proposed split — aimed at unlocking value from non-core assets — is subject to statutory and regulatory approvals.
Under the demerger terms, Vedanta shareholders will receive one share of Vedanta Property Platforms Ltd for every 20 shares held in Vedanta Limited. The move is in line with the conglomerate's broader strategy of separating distinct business verticals to sharpen investor focus and improve capital allocation.
With commodity tailwinds still broadly intact and multiple demerger-driven value unlocking plays in motion, Vedanta's structural trajectory heading into Q2 FY27 will hinge on whether input cost pressures ease and regulatory clearances for the property split arrive on schedule.
