WhatsApp Set to Introduce Usernames and Dynamic Pricing for Enhanced User Privacy and Business Engagement
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) The well-known messaging service WhatsApp is set to unveil usernames and unique IDs, allowing users to send messages and engage in voice or video calls without disclosing their phone numbers, as reported.
This innovative feature is anticipated to be launched worldwide by June 2026.
Reports suggest that both individuals and businesses will have the opportunity to secure unique identifiers, akin to those found on various social media platforms.
“We are thrilled to introduce usernames to WhatsApp in the near future, facilitating connections with new friends, groups, and businesses without the need to share phone numbers,” the company stated.
The feature is expected to be optional, allowing users to retain their phone numbers if they prefer. This strategy aims to prevent disruption and deter users from moving to competing platforms.
Moreover, WhatsApp is considering a dynamic pricing model for businesses, where companies could bid in real-time to send marketing communications, as per reports.
This new system is likely to be tested in the latter half of 2026, with a potential rollout in 2027.
India, boasting over 500 million users, continues to be one of WhatsApp’s major markets globally.
A report released earlier in February highlighted that social media platforms currently impact 77 percent of retail purchase decisions in India, with Meta platforms accounting for 96 percent of social discovery.
The report by Meta and the Retailers Association of India (RAI) indicated that short-form videos and creators are propelling product discovery, with 97 percent of consumers watching short videos daily and 60 percent of their time on Facebook and Instagram dedicated to video content.
The report further revealed that 72 percent of product discovery occurs on the messaging platform WhatsApp.
