Mumbai, Dec 11 (NationPress) Actor Abhishek Bachchan is filled with enthusiasm as he prepares to experience “Sholay – The Final Cut,” a completely restored 4K rendition of the iconic 1975 film, on the big screen in all its splendor.
Describing it as a lifelong aspiration, Abhishek expressed his delight as this legendary classic is set to return to theaters on December 12, 2025. On Thursday, he took to his Instagram account to unveil a poster of the film showcasing his father, the esteemed actor Amitabh Bachchan. He conveyed his excitement in the caption, stating, “The greatest story never told! I can’t wait to see Sholay in all its glory on the big screen. I have NEVER viewed Sholay on the big screen, only on TV and VHS/DVD. It’s been a lifelong dream.”
For those unfamiliar, “Sholay” is making its comeback in theaters as “Sholay – The Final Cut,” now featuring the original climax along with two scenes that were previously cut. This exclusive re-release honors the 50th anniversary of Ramesh Sippy’s cinematic masterpiece, which is celebrated as one of the most significant films in Indian cinema.
The restoration is of historic importance, as the original climax—captured by Sippy but omitted prior to the film’s initial release during the Emergency—was banned by the Central Board of Film Certification due to its violent content. This much-discussed scene, never shown publicly, illustrates Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) eliminating Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) with spiked shoes.
The Film Heritage Foundation has painstakingly restored the film in 4K. The official X handle of the Film Heritage Foundation had previously shared the announcement poster with the caption, “The wait is finally over!! ‘Sholay - The Final Cut’ restored by Film Heritage Foundation in 4K with the original ending being revealed for the first time is set to be released by Sippy Films in 1500 screens across India on December 12, 2025!!! (sic).”
Earlier in 2025, Sholay was featured at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The premiere of the restored 4K version saw the attendance of Ramesh Sippy and actor Bobby Deol, among others.
