Debate Ignites Over Bhoota Kola, Gained Fame Through 'Kantara'

Mumbai, Dec 2 (NationPress) A debate has ignited regarding the renowned folk dance form of Bhoota Kola. A recent post on X featured a clip of this dance, which gained attention through the film ‘Kantara’, starring Rishab Shetty.

The clip showcased the dance being performed on a stage during a local event, with a chief guest in attendance.

This debate arose from the concerns expressed by Kannadigas regarding the cultural significance of the dance form being used merely for entertainment purposes.

One user remarked, “We have been urging Mangalorean representatives to take action, yet no one is addressing this issue now!! @AshokRaiestate @vedavyasbjp @CaptBrijesh @KotasBJP @utkhader Can we put an end to daivaradane being involved in movies/stage/shows/street performances? This has been ongoing for years, and silence from everyone is deafening! Isn’t daivaradane a fundamental aspect of tulunadu? Why is the performance on street/stage/shows/movies still permitted by the government? Is this really a form of entertainment? We had hoped that Mangalorean politicians would address this, but no one is speaking up! Please set aside political affiliations and advocate for tulunadu and daivaradane (sic).”

Another user commented, “This is nothing but a mockery of our culture (sic).”

A third user stated, “This is our tradition, and it should be performed with utmost devotion in its rightful places. It should not be showcased on stage. Please respect the religious sentiments of the people.”

Meanwhile, ‘Kantara’, written and directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under Hombale Films, features Rishab in dual roles. The film is set in and was filmed in Keradi, coastal Karnataka, with principal photography commencing in August 2021.

It achieved significant commercial success, becoming the second highest-grossing Kannada film of all time after ‘K.G.F: Chapter 2’, which was released within the same year just a few months apart.

In addition, it ranked as the fourth highest-grossing film in India for 2022. The film has not only captivated audiences but also received accolades from authorities as it was showcased at the 54th IFFI Indian panorama section, where it secured the Silver Peacock - Special Jury Award.

Rishab Shetty is currently engaged with his upcoming project ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, a prequel to ‘Kantara’.
