Mumbai, October 14 (NationPress) - Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi was warmly welcomed during his visit to Darul Uloom Deoband in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Reacting to this reception, renowned Bollywood screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar expressed his dismay through a poignant message on social media, stating that he felt a deep sense of shame witnessing the high regard shown to a representative of the world’s most notorious terrorist group, the Taliban.
Using his X account (formerly known as Twitter), Akhtar condemned the warm reception given to the Taliban leader by the Darul Uloom Deoband. He remarked, "I bow my head in shame upon witnessing the respect and reception afforded to the representative of the world’s most despicable terrorist group, the Taliban, by those who preach against all forms of terrorism."
He further added, "Shame on Deoband too for honoring their 'Islamic Hero', who has imposed a complete ban on girls' education. My fellow Indians, what is happening to us?" Akhtar’s comments sparked a variety of reactions online.
One netizen remarked, "Dear Javed Saab, while shame is warranted—let’s not ignore the fact that the current BJP-led Modi government has also welcomed Taliban representatives with open protocol, treating them like dignitaries. When 'terror vs terror' sermons come from certain pulpits, remember who’s rolling out the red carpet behind the scenes—that's the true betrayal."
Another user suggested, "Geopolitics is complex. Welcoming the Taliban FM doesn’t imply we endorse their beliefs. Perhaps we can influence them positively and help reshape their perspectives."
On October 11, Muttaqi received a warm welcome at the Islamic seminary from Mohtamim (Vice-Chancellor) Abul Qasim Nomani, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani, and other officials. Numerous students and locals gathered at the Deoband campus to greet the foreign dignitary, although many were halted by security measures.
During his visit to Darul Uloom Deoband, Muttaqi expressed hopes for improved relations between India and Afghanistan in the future.
