Malayalam superstar Mohanlal on Wednesday, 17 June announced that his celebrated cult classic Kireedam would return to theatres in a 4K restored version, sending fans of the 1989 film into a frenzy. The actor shared the news across his social media timelines, confirming an imminent theatrical re-release of one of Malayalam cinema's most iconic films.

Posting on his social media handles, Mohanlal wrote: 'The crown returns. Bigger. Clearer. Stronger. Kireedam in 4K - Coming Soon.' No specific release date was mentioned, though the phrasing 'Coming Soon' signals the theatrical run is close. The announcement comes months after the restored version made its world premiere at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa last year.

The Restoration Journey

The 4K restoration of Kireedam was undertaken by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) – National Film Archive of India (NFAI) under the National Film Heritage Mission. The archive worked from a 35mm release print, the original camera negative having decomposed over the decades. The final colour grading was supervised by the film's cinematographer, S. Kumar, ensuring fidelity to the original visual intent.

Mohanlal had shared the world premiere news on his X timeline last year, writing: 'The film has been meticulously restored by NFDC – National Film Archive of India from a 35mm release print, thankfully preserved by the archive for several decades after the original camera negative had decomposed. The final grading was supervised by the film's cinematographer, S. Kumar. It is an honour to witness this classic return to the screen.'

Directed by Sibi Malayil, Kireedam released in 1989 and featured Mohanlal, Thilakan, Parvathy Jayaram, and Mohanraj in lead roles.
