Music composer and singer Shankar Mahadevan says the enduring power of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara's soundtrack comes from sincerity rather than design — the team never consciously aimed to craft travel anthems or culturally iconic numbers.

Speaking on the occasion of the film completing 15 years in Hindi cinema, Mahadevan reflected on what made the music resonate across generations. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, directed by Zoya Akhtar, stars Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif, and Kalki Koechlin. The film follows three childhood friends — Arjun, Kabir, and Imran — on a three-week road trip across Spain for Kabir's bachelor party.

Sincerity Over Strategy

'We don't anticipate that songs become travel songs or historical songs, like in Dil Chahta Hai or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. We do it with sincerity,' Mahadevan said. He emphasised that the film's layered storytelling naturally demanded music that could hold multiple emotional registers at once.

'The film has multiple layers. There's a lot of laughter, a lot of masti, a lot of pranks, and it shows how three best friends behave with each other,' he added. 'But there are also many emotional layers in the film. By the end of it, you realise that it's not just a film about fun and friendship; it's about a very strong emotion. There are songs for every situation.'

Songs That Become Part of Your Life

Mahadevan pointed to specific tracks that illustrate the soundtrack's emotional range. 'If you listen to the song Khwabon Ke Parindey, it comes at a point in the film where it gives you a completely different kind of emotion. If you listen to Der Lagi Lekin, Maine Ab Hai Jeena Seekh Liya, those songs can be a part of your life. They remind you of various situations in your own journey. And that's the beauty of the music of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,' he said.

This philosophy — of writing for the film's emotional truth rather than for a cultural outcome — arguably explains why the soundtrack has outlasted the typical Bollywood release cycle. The album is regularly cited alongside Dil Chahta Hai as a benchmark for road-trip cinema music in India.

Shankar Mahadevan: The Composer Behind the Music

Mahadevan is one-third of the celebrated Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy trio, which has scored music for some of Hindi cinema's most memorable films. His own career arc is equally distinctive: he first broke through as an Indi-pop artist, fusing Carnatic, Hindustani, and Jazz traditions.
