Sumeet Vyas reveals how 'Chumbak' producer JD Majethia helped in family medical crisis
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actor Sumeet Vyas has opened up about a deeply personal moment when Chumbak producer JD Majethia stepped in to help him navigate a family medical emergency — a gesture that left him genuinely moved. Vyas made the revelation during promotional interactions for the show in the BKC area of Mumbai, speaking alongside co-stars Sumeet Raghavan, Sandeepa Dhar, Deven Bhojani, Neena Gupta, and Manasi Parekh.
The story behind the gesture
Vyas recounted that his mother-in-law had fallen ill and was being treated in Punjab, with a possibility of shifting her to Mumbai for further care. With few contacts to rely on, the actor took a chance and called Majethia — a man he had, by his own admission, never previously interacted with on a personal level.
'I have never had any interaction with JD sir. For some reason, I felt that he would know someone. Out of the blue, I called him. And he did know someone. And then he spoke to the hospital. And then I got an appointment from the hospital,' Vyas said. What struck him most was that Majethia followed up three separate times asking after the family — and never once mentioned the episode on set.
'He had no business doing all of this. Such a fine human being. And never mentioned it. It's not like he went back to the set and spoke about it,' Vyas added.
A different kind of comedy challenge
Beyond the personal anecdote, Vyas also reflected on the creative stretch that Chumbak demanded. Known for his dry, understated wit — a style that built his reputation in Indian web entertainment — the actor admitted that the show's brand of comedy initially gave him pause.
When director Atish first narrated the brief, Vyas was offered the role played by Sumeet Raghavan, which he turned down citing temperament. 'I was afraid that I might not be able to do it that well. And it was too big a jump for me as that required a special skill set. Which Sumeet Raghavan has — he's extraordinary at that,' Vyas said. He added that the character he ultimately plays felt instinctive from the first reading.
