Actress Tabu has opened up about the scepticism that surrounded the Hindi release of 'Drishyam 2', revealing that even close friends questioned whether audiences would bother watching the sequel after the Malayalam version had already been widely seen — particularly during the pandemic. Despite those reservations, the film went on to become one of the biggest Hindi box-office successes of its year, leaving Tabu herself surprised by the public response.

The Doubt Before Release

Speaking at the trailer launch of the upcoming 'Drishyam The Conclusion', Tabu recalled the atmosphere of uncertainty that preceded 'Drishyam 2''s theatrical run. The film arrived in the immediate aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when the entire film industry was grappling with questions about whether audiences would return to cinemas at all.

'When the second part was going to release, it was just after the pandemic and everything. And the Malayalam version had already come. Some of my friends themselves were like, 'Yeh aa nahi hai, tum log ki picture kaun dekhne jaayega?'' Tabu recalled.

The actress admitted that the concern was not limited to outsiders — it had begun to weigh on her own mind as well. 'It was really worrying for me to think that maybe nobody would go and see it here. It had already come in Malayalam, and during the pandemic, everyone had watched it. And I wanted to really wait and watch whether really nobody would go and see the second part or what. But I was really completely clouded,' she said.

Why the Uncertainty Ran Deep

The doubts were compounded by two overlapping anxieties: the post-pandemic fragility of theatrical footfalls, and the widespread availability of the Malayalam original, which had already reached large audiences through streaming. Notably, the Hindi remake industry had faced repeated criticism at the time for recycling content that regional audiences had already consumed — making 'Drishyam 2' a genuine test case for whether dubbed or remade sequels could still command multiplex crowds.

Tabu noted that the conversation around the film shifted dramatically once it opened to strong numbers, with audiences no longer troubled by prior exposure to the Malayalam version. The film's success, she suggested, demonstrated that emotional investment in characters — rather than novelty of plot — drives repeat theatrical viewing.

Tabu on the Franchise's Future

Reflecting on what the 'Drishyam' franchise has meant to her, Tabu was characteristically candid about the possibility of a third instalment. 'The excitement that people have is something that I will always treasure, apart from the intensity of this character and the range of emotions that she got to play. I am not saying goodbye to this unless Kumar ji and Abhishek give us something on paper saying that it will never be made again. Then we will believe it. Otherwise, you never know. Kumar ji will call up and say, 'Abhishek ne ek outstanding thought nikal liya hai 4 ke liye,'' she said.
