The movie, produced by Newton Cinema, will have its World Premiere in the Bright Future section of IFFR, scheduled from January 29 to February 8, 2026.
'Mayilaa' is set against the backdrop of a quaint village in Tamil Nadu and follows the journey of Poongodi, a woman whose quest for independence and self-respect evolves into a profound act of rebellion. Through the perspective of her daughter Sudar, the film poignantly showcases the unvoiced strength of women and children navigating the complexities of tenderness and trauma in their daily lives.
“Semmalar’s narrative is both distinct and brave,” remarked Anto Chittilappilly, the Founder and Producer of Newton Cinema. “Her direction fuses emotional accuracy with insightful social commentary. We feel honored to champion her vision alongside supporters like Pa Ranjith, Sreekar Prasad, Director Ram, and others who recognized the significance of this story from its inception.”
Expressing his admiration for the director, Pa Ranjith stated: “'Mayilaa' authentically represents the intricate realities and inner lives of working women from underrepresented communities. With a candid cinematic approach, Semmalar Annam encapsulates a woman’s world with exceptional nuance. The performances by Melodi and Shudar are remarkable—'Mayilaa' resonated with me deeply, akin to a beautiful poem.”
The cast includes Melodi Dorcas as Mayilaa, a skilled theatre performer with over ten years of experience, alongside V. Shudar Kodi portraying Poongodi’s daughter in her debut role. The ensemble features Geetha Kailasam, Sathya Maruthani, Auto Chandran, RJ Priyanka, and Janaki Suresh.
The film's creative team consists of Vinoth Janakiraman for cinematography, A. Sreekar Prasad for editing, Meenakshi Ilayaraja for background score and vocals, and Anand Krishnamoorthi for sound design.
Semmalar Annam, who pursued Visual Communication and Journalism at PSG CAS, Coimbatore and was mentored by indie filmmaker Arunmozhi Sivaprakasam, has also appeared in several renowned Tamil films.
