Actor Tusshar Kapoor, who was last seen in 'Welcome to the Jungle', has opened up about a decision that shaped the early arc of his 25-year Bollywood career — his deliberate choice not to make his debut under the banner of his sister, powerhouse producer Ektaa Kapoor. The revelation came as Tusshar marked a quarter-century in the industry.

The Vow He Made to Ektaa

Tusshar recalled telling Ektaa plainly: 'I'll never do a film with you. My first film will never be with you' — a declaration that, by his own account, left her extremely upset. Ektaa, who had built one of television's most formidable production empires, had reportedly pushed to launch her brother herself, telling him, 'We should launch you. Why should somebody else launch you?'

The sibling standoff ended when producer Vashu Bhagnani stepped in to launch Tusshar. Ektaa's reservations softened considerably once she saw the debut film's first poster.

The Poster That Won Ektaa Over

Tusshar described the moment in detail: 'The poster that he brought out, the first poster, without revealing any faces, with an umbrella and rain, I remember it wasn't even released to the public. It was just for... that time there was no press, in the sense that there was no social media. So, I think during the mahurat, he had shown that poster to his distributors, and my face was not even shown in it. So she was very excited about that. She said that he's going to present you very well.'

The film in question was 'Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai', which released in 2001 and became a significant commercial success, establishing Tusshar as a leading man.

Not Ego, But Self-Worth

When asked whether his decision stemmed from a younger sibling's ego or a genuine desire to forge his own path, Tusshar was unequivocal. 'Always wanted, neither should my father, mother or my sister launch me. It was not ego, it was just the fact that I have to feel good about myself. It's very easy for a family member to launch another family member. What is the achievement in that? The achievement is when you've earned something on your own merit. An outsider will only invest money if they feel there's some potential in you,' he said.

The statement carries particular weight in an industry where nepotism debates have intensified over the past several years, with star kids frequently drawing scrutiny over the advantages of family connections.

'Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai' clocked 25 years of release on 25 May 2025, prompting Tusshar to mark the occasion with an emotional post. 'My journey began with a film that gave me not just a debut, but a lifetime of memories. Honestly, today, when I look back at how time has flown by it feels unreal. So much has changed over the years, but the love I've received from all of you has remained constant through every phase,' he wrote.

Tusshar's career, spanning two and a half decades, has included hits in comedy and ensemble films, and he has also established himself as a single father — a personal chapter he has spoken about publicly.
