New Delhi, Dec 2 (NationPress) The government's dedication to inclusivity and self-reliance for all is fueling a robust initiative for disability rights in India, officials stated on Tuesday.
As per the 2011 Census, there are 2.68 crore individuals with disabilities in India, representing 2.21 percent of the overall population. Among these, nearly 1.50 crore are male, while 1.18 crore are female.
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, characterizes a “person with disability” as someone with a long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairment that, in conjunction with barriers, obstructs their full and equal participation in society.
“In a country where diversity serves as the foundation of national identity, a powerful movement advocating for disability rights is emerging, propelled by the government’s pledge towards genuine inclusivity and self-reliance for all,” the government remarked in an official communication.
“Supported by progressive policies and innovative programmes, the government ensures that no one is disadvantaged due to their disability and creates avenues for opportunity and active participation in society for every individual,” it continued.
The government has rolled out numerous initiatives and schemes aimed at ensuring accessibility and inclusion for individuals with disabilities, such as the Sugamya Bharat App, Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aids/Appliances (ADIP) scheme, Deendayal Divyangjan Rehabilitation Scheme (DDRS), National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC), Unique ID for Persons with Disabilities (UDID), and PM-DAKSH-DEPwD Portal.
Furthermore, the government is harnessing technology to create a barrier-free digital and learning environment, exemplified by the Indian Sign Language (ISL) Digital Repository (3,189 e-content videos) and the Channel 31 for ISL Training.
Prominent events like the Divya Kala Mela have also facilitated market connections for Divyang artisans and entrepreneurs across the country, highlighting the “Vocal for Local” initiative.
“The transformation of disability issues in India signifies a growing acknowledgment of the rights and capabilities of persons with disabilities. The formation of specialized departments and initiatives showcases a commitment to promoting inclusivity, creativity, and resilience within the community,” the statement elaborated.
“By offering platforms to highlight talent and enable economic opportunities, these initiatives not only empower individuals but also foster a more inclusive society where everyone can flourish with dignity,” it added.
