Are 73 South Koreans Detained in Cambodia Returning Home for Investigation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Yeongjongdo, Jan 23 (NationPress) A total of 73 South Koreans who were detained in Cambodia due to their alleged connection to online scam operations were forcibly returned to their homeland on Friday to undergo investigations.
A chartered flight from Korean Air landed at Incheon International Airport at 9:41 a.m. after leaving Phnom Penh, marking the largest repatriation of criminal suspects from a single foreign nation in South Korean history.
The individuals were taken into custody in Cambodia following a collaborative investigation by South Korean and Cambodian authorities, facing accusations of swindling approximately 48.6 billion won (equivalent to $33.1 million) from 869 South Korean victims, as reported by Cheong Wa Dae.
Upon arriving at the airport, the suspects were immediately placed under police custody, equipped with court-issued warrants, and were subsequently transferred to various local police stations for further inquiries. Authorities intend to request warrants to prolong their detention.
At the airport, many of the suspects, predominantly in their 20s and 30s, were seen wearing short-sleeve shirts and shorts, likely due to the warm Cambodian climate.
Of the group, 70 individuals are implicated in online fraud schemes, such as romance scams, while three others face charges related to hostage robbery and gambling.
One suspect allegedly fled to Cambodia after committing a sexual crime against a minor, and another is accused of keeping a victim captive at a criminal hideout and extorting money from their family, according to reports from Yonhap.
The group also includes a couple who are charged with defrauding 12 billion won from 104 victims through romance scams utilizing deep fake technology. This couple reportedly evaded capture by undergoing plastic surgery prior to their detention.
The collaborative operation resulted in raids on seven scam facilities across Cambodia, including locations in Sihanoukville, Poipet, and Mondulkiri Province, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
Additionally, authorities rescued young men in their 20s who had been unlawfully detained and subjected to torture at these compounds.
This joint effort involved the National Police Agency, the Ministry of Justice, the National Intelligence Service, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
