Dhaka, April 4 (NationPress) Bangladesh has reported an additional 13 dengue cases, bringing the cumulative total of vector-borne infections to 1,890 this year, according to local media sources.

The new infections were documented within the last 24 hours leading up to Thursday morning.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) indicated that two cases were recorded in Dhaka Division and 11 in Barishal Division.

This year, dengue has resulted in 13 fatalities nationwide, while 55 individuals are currently receiving treatment for the mosquito-borne illness in hospitals across the country.

In 2023, the disease claimed 575 lives, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.

According to a recent World Health Organisation South-East Asia Region Epidemiological bulletin, the overall count of dengue cases in Bangladesh is higher than that of 2024.

The bulletin also noted that in 2025, at least 1,822 dengue cases and 16 dengue-related deaths were recorded, marking a 123% increase in infections and a 59% rise in fatalities compared to the same period in 2024.

Between March 3-9, approximately 70 new dengue cases were reported, reflecting a 12.9% increase from the 62 cases documented the previous week.

The newspaper Prothom Alo highlighted a significant rise in dengue infections in November 2024.

Health experts, physicians, and entomologists have expressed concerns that adequate measures to combat dengue are lacking, and the healthcare system has not been sufficiently reformed.

Dengue, a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, poses a serious public health issue in Bangladesh, primarily spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
