Brasilia, Sep 11 (NationPress) Brazil is a sovereign nation and its citizens are masters of their own destiny, declared President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a message directed towards US President Donald Trump.
This announcement followed the comments made by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who stated that the United States would not hesitate to employ its economic and military power to uphold "freedom of expression." This was in response to inquiries regarding the trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
In his response, Lula remarked: "If Trump visits, we will present this panel to him for comparison with the American panel. It is essential he understands our confidence. We are a sovereign nation and we steer our own future. This is a testament to Brazilian excellence across all sectors."
On July 30, the Trump administration revealed intentions to impose tariffs as high as 50 percent on Brazilian exports while sanctioning Alexandre de Moraes, a Brazilian Supreme Court justice overseeing Bolsonaro’s case, who is accused of attempting to retain power post his defeat in the 2022 elections.
Earlier in August, President Lula stated that Brasilia would not accept being treated as inferior in light of rising tensions with the United States.
During a cabinet meeting on August 26, Lula dismissed foreign interventions, asserting that no individual in Brazil is above the law.
Reinforcing Brazil's sovereignty, Lula emphasized: "Anyone wishing to access our 8.5 million square kilometers—including our airspace, maritime areas, and forests—must adhere to our Constitution and laws."
He also addressed Trump’s tariffs on Brazilian goods and threats concerning regulations on substantial US technology firms.
Lula confirmed that the Brazilian government is prepared for negotiations with the United States "on equal footing," adding, "What we refuse to accept is being treated as subordinates."
