Berlin, Aug 17 (NationPress) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to arrive in Washington on Monday, where he will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders for discussions with US President Donald Trump, as announced by the German government on Sunday.
The purpose of the visit is to facilitate an "exchange of information" with Trump following his recent engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Following the summit in Alaska, Zelensky confirmed his meeting with Trump in Washington.
Merz is expected to address the current landscape of peace initiatives, with a focus on security guarantees, territorial matters, and ongoing support for Ukraine, as noted in the statement.
Earlier on Saturday, Trump conducted a telephone briefing with European leaders and Zelensky regarding his discussions with Putin.
After their meeting, both Trump and Putin indicated that they made strides in their three-hour talks on Friday, edging closer to a resolution of the Ukraine War, although no immediate ceasefire was declared.
On Saturday, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to label the Alaska meeting as a success.
“A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late-night phone call with President Zelensky of Ukraine, and various European Leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO. It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to pursue a Peace Agreement, which would conclude the war, rather than a temporary Ceasefire Agreement,” Trump noted.
“President Zelensky will be coming to DC, the Oval Office, on Monday afternoon. If all goes according to plan, we will arrange a meeting with President Putin. This could potentially save millions of lives. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” the post continued.
European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Portuguese President Antonio Costa, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, expressed their support for Trump’s initiatives to “end the violence in Ukraine and conclude Russia's war of aggression,” aiming for a fair and lasting peace.
“As President Trump stated, ‘there’s no deal until there's a deal.' As envisioned by him, the next step must involve further discussions, including with President Zelensky, whom he will meet soon. We are also willing to collaborate with President Trump and President Zelensky towards a trilateral summit with European backing,” read a joint statement from the European leaders after Saturday's call.
