Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New York, April 21 (NationPress) - US Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer has officially become the third cabinet member to exit President Donald Trump’s administration in the last two months, amidst a series of controversies during his second term.
On Monday, Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, announced her resignation via X, indicating that she will transition to the private sector.
Chavez-DeRemer has been embroiled in allegations including an affair with a member of her security detail, personal trips disguised as official travel, consuming alcohol in her office, and creating turmoil within her department.
All three officials who have resigned are women; the others include Pam Bondi, the Attorney General, who was dismissed this month, and Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, who was ousted last month.
Noem also faced allegations of an affair with an advisor, which she denied.
During her time as Labour Secretary, one notable action was the cancellation of millions of dollars in funding that the department’s Bureau of International Labour Affairs allocated to NGOs for anti-slavery and anti-child labour initiatives.
Cheung mentioned that her deputy, Keith Sonderling, will serve as the acting labour secretary.
While Trump did not publicly comment on her departure, Cheung praised her for doing an exceptional job in her role, emphasizing her commitment to safeguarding American workers, advocating for fair labour practices, and assisting Americans in acquiring new skills to enhance their livelihoods.
Earlier, Chavez-DeRemer's chief of staff and the security personnel allegedly involved with her were terminated.
She was under scrutiny from the department’s inspector general regarding allegations of professional misconduct and interference by her family within the department.
Her husband, Shawn DeRemer, was prohibited from entering her office after several female staff members reported inappropriate behavior, leading to a police inquiry.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has also launched an investigation into the allegations against her.
At 58 years old, Chavez-DeRemer previously served in the House of Representatives for Oregon before losing her re-election campaign.
Trump appointed her due to support from the influential Teamsters union, which backed his re-election efforts.
As Labour Secretary, she clashed with unions as she initiated moves to dismantle various labour protections, including those related to workplace safety and minimum wage for certain worker categories.
