New Delhi, Oct 9 (NationPress) Victor Hugo Echeverri Jaramillo, the Colombian Ambassador to India, emphasized the increasing possibilities for trade and investment between the two countries on Thursday. He pointed out that in an era of shifting geopolitical landscapes, identifying 'trustworthy partners' is vital—a role both India and Colombia embody.
In an interview with IANS, the ambassador referred to New Delhi and Bogota as 'reliable partners' and expressed confidence that their bilateral relationship would grow not only in political and commercial aspects but also culturally.
“There are tremendous opportunities at present, especially during a time marked by a global trade conflict characterized by tariffs. We require dependable partners, and I believe that India and Colombia can achieve great success together. Currently, our bilateral trade is approximately $4.7 billion annually. There is a significant chance to increase this figure,” Jaramillo stated.
He detailed that Colombia exports over $3 billion worth of goods to India, while India's exports to Colombia are around $1.4 billion. Indian businesses are already present in Colombia, particularly in sectors like pharmaceuticals, three-wheelers, services, and technology.
“Conversely, Colombia mainly exports energy resources to India, including oil and thermal coal. This illustrates the complementary nature of our economies and the potential for enhanced cooperation. We are delighted to see major Indian companies investing in Colombia,” the Ambassador elaborated.
Jaramillo noted that Colombia's extensive network of free trade agreements grants access to over 1.5 billion consumers globally, which presents a substantial opportunity for Indian firms to establish operations in Colombia and leverage this network.
He also highlighted the significance of high-level political exchanges in fortifying bilateral relations.
“In April 2023, we had the privilege of hosting India's Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar—the first-ever visit by an Indian Foreign Minister to Colombia. This was a landmark occasion, and we have since been crafting a collaborative agenda,” he mentioned.
“Recently, we also welcomed P. Kumaran, Secretary (East) at India's Ministry of External Affairs. This has opened new avenues for collaboration. In recent years, we have formalized multiple Memorandums of Understanding and hosted visits from two Colombian vice ministers to India,” Jaramillo continued.
He emphasized joint endeavors through India's ITEC programme and recognized substantial potential in the audiovisual sector, noting a recent agreement to foster joint film and media projects between Indian and Colombian firms.
“Our bilateral relations are flourishing not just politically and commercially but also in terms of culture and collaboration,” the Ambassador concluded, stressing the extensive opportunities for deeper engagement between the two nations.
