Kathmandu, Feb 15 (NationPress) On Sunday, a huge influx of worshippers began lining up early in the morning to pay their respects to Lord Shiva at the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, marking the occasion of Mahashivaratri, one of the most significant Hindu festivals celebrated in Nepal.
The Pashupatinath Temple is regarded as a premier Shiva pilgrimage destination, alongside Kedarnath and Kashi Vishwanath. Many devotees, particularly from Nepal and India, as well as other regions, flock to Pashupatinath during this festival.
From dawn, thousands of pilgrims from various parts of Nepal and neighboring India queued to worship at this revered temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The atmosphere resonated with chants of 'Om Namah Shivaya', as sadhus, saints, and devotees engaged in traditional rituals, contributing to a vibrant and spiritual environment around the temple complex.
“Since early morning, devotees have been lining up to pray to Lord Shiva, and the numbers continue to swell,” said Shubhas Chandra Joshi, executive director of the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT), in an interview with IANS. “By 9:30 a.m., we estimated that around 100,000 devotees had already prayed.”
To manage the flow of worshippers, all four doors of the temple were opened as early as 2 a.m., according to Joshi.
He noted that at least 3,000 Hindu saints, particularly from Nepal and India, have gathered in the Pashupati area, where they are conducting special religious ceremonies and spiritual practices that symbolize devotion, renunciation, and spiritual discipline.
“Approximately 150 Naga sadhus from India are also participating in spiritual activities at the temple,” Joshi stated, adding that necessary provisions for food, shelter, and other essentials have been arranged for their stay.
The PADT anticipates that over 700,000 devotees will come to pray throughout the day, with a notable number arriving from India.
“We have not yet tallied the precise number of Indian devotees at Pashupatinath,” Joshi commented.
The PADT has also implemented essential arrangements for crowd management, safety and security, health services, and sanitation to facilitate the smooth conduct of the festival.
