Copenhagen, Sep 25 (NationPress) Denmark has reached out to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the European Union (EU) after temporarily closing Aalborg airport and placing three other airports on heightened alert on Thursday due to unauthorized drones conducting what officials have described as coordinated assaults.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that the nation is considering invoking the alliance's Article 4 in response to what they classify as a hybrid attack involving a "systematic approach" in flying drones near essential infrastructure, according to Euro News.

Authorities have granted permission to shoot down any future drones if necessary. "We will identify those responsible for these incursions. We have various military assets, including F-35 jets and frigates, that can aid in defending Denmark," Poulsen emphasized.

The Deputy PM indicated that Denmark currently lacks the necessary tools to effectively counter this ongoing threat, noting the absence of a ground-based air defense system, a decision the government made to acquire this month. He acknowledged that even with this system, it may not be fully capable of addressing the type of drones detected over Denmark on Thursday.

Poulsen remarked, "There is no single capability that can resolve this issue." He stressed that Denmark must have multiple resources to combat whatever challenges arise, whether they be drones or missiles. The airports affected included Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sonderborg, and Skrydstrup.

Denmark's police confirmed that Aalborg airport was closed. Reports indicate that the disruptive drones left the area after approximately three hours. The North Jutland Police stated they are closely monitoring the situation at Aalborg but did not disclose details regarding the number of drones involved.

Previously, drone incursions in Denmark have been reported, which officials suspect may involve Russian interference. A similar incident affected Copenhagen airport earlier this week. Authorities noted that the drones at Aalborg exhibited a similar pattern to those that disrupted operations in Copenhagen. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen labeled the drone attack as the "most serious yet on Denmark's infrastructure."

Additionally, Norwegian authorities shut down the airspace at Oslo airport for three hours on Monday due to potential threats from unauthorized drone activities, according to Euro News. On Wednesday, Norway's Foreign Minister reported that Danish and Norwegian officials are collaborating on the investigations concerning the incidents in Copenhagen and Oslo, although no connections have been established yet.
