Their stance reflects a commitment to maintaining electoral integrity while threatening potential impeachment of judicial officials involved in the case.

Seoul, May 5 (NationPress) The Democratic Party (DP) on Monday urged the Seoul High Court to delay the remanded trial of its presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung until after the June 3 election, pledging to utilize all its authority to thwart what it termed a 'judiciary coup.'

This appeal was made as the party considered the possibility of pursuing the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, following the top court's reversal of the high court’s earlier acquittal regarding an election law violation case involving Lee, sending it back for a remanded trial.

The initial session of the trial is set for May 15.

"Should the high court fail to agree on postponing the trial by May 12, we will utilize all powers bestowed upon us by the people to block this 'judiciary coup'," stated Rep. Yun Ho-jung, a senior member of the DP's election committee, during a press conference.

May 12 marks the commencement of official campaigning for the presidential election.

"We unequivocally convey our intent to obstruct the high court's trial proceedings," he added, warning that the legislative branch would enact necessary measures on behalf of the populace if these attempts were obstructed.

Yun's comments indicate that the DP is contemplating the impeachment of Chief Justice Cho, as reported by Yonhap. On Sunday, the DP postponed a decision regarding this impeachment following an emergency gathering of its lawmakers.

This call comes as Lee risks losing his ability to contest for office for five years if he receives a final sentence of a fine exceeding 1 million won (approximately US$717) for breaching election laws.

Lee's presidential aspirations could be jeopardized if a final ruling is confirmed prior to the June 3 election.

Responding to the DP's request to delay the trial, Lee remarked to reporters that election campaigns must be conducted in a 'fair' manner, in accordance with the Constitution.

He also expressed his intention to 'respect' any decision made by his party concerning the potential impeachment of a Supreme Court justice.

"I trust the party will implement necessary actions reflective of the people's perspectives to combat this insurrection," he remarked. "I will honor the party's decisions regarding its responsibilities."

DP Rep. Park Sung-joon clarified during a radio interview on Monday that the party has opted to leave all decisions to its leadership, rather than postponing them.

"There were discussions regarding even impeachment, while keeping all options available if the Supreme Court and the high court persist with unconstitutional and illegal conduct."

Point of View

I recognize the complexities surrounding the Democratic Party's urgent plea to delay Lee Jae-myung's trial. This situation emphasizes the intersection of judicial processes and electoral integrity, a vital issue in any democratic society. It is crucial to ensure fair treatment and transparent governance as the nation approaches its pivotal election.
