Is all well within the UN? EAM Jaishankar raises concerns
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Oct 24 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed that all is not well within the United Nations, stating that its resolutions fail to address global priorities. He highlighted the case of a UN Security Council member that provided protection to the terrorist group responsible for the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
During the launch of a postage stamp celebrating the 80th anniversary of the United Nations in New Delhi on Friday, EAM Jaishankar honored the sacrifices made by Indian UN peacekeepers and discussed the recent Chiefs of Army Staff conclave held in the national capital, which brought together representatives from 30 troop-contributing nations.
He stated, "We must acknowledge that the United Nations is facing significant challenges. Its decision-making does not reflect the diverse membership nor does it tackle global priorities. The debates have become increasingly polarized, and its operations are visibly gridlocked."
EAM Jaishankar pointed out, "When a sitting Security Council member openly shields a terrorist organization that claims responsibility for heinous acts like the Pahalgam attack, it severely undermines the credibility of multilateralism." He further questioned, "If victims and terrorists are treated equally under the guise of global strategy, how can we trust the sincerity of those involved? The deterioration of international peace and security has become mere rhetoric, while the challenges to development and socioeconomic progress are even more dire. The delay in achieving the SDG Agenda 2030 serves as a crucial indicator of the distress faced by the global south."
He emphasized the numerous issues at stake, including trade policies, supply chain dependencies, and political domination. However, on such a significant anniversary, he urged that we cannot lose hope; the commitment to multilateralism must endure. Despite its flaws, the United Nations deserves support in these challenging times. Our belief in international cooperation must be reaffirmed and revitalized. It is in this spirit that we gather to commemorate this occasion and strive to create a better world.
EAM Jaishankar acknowledged that ongoing conflicts are having a devastating impact on human lives. He reaffirmed India's strong backing for United Nations multilateralism.
"Today, we continue to witness numerous major conflicts that not only take a heavy toll on human lives but also affect the well-being of the global community. The global south, in particular, has suffered greatly while developed nations seem insulated from the repercussions. Celebrating the 80th anniversary is a significant milestone for any organization," he remarked.
"On UN Day, I want to reiterate India's dedication to the values of peace, security, development, and progress. India has consistently been a strong advocate for the United Nations and multilateralism. Our commitment to global peace and security is evident through our unwavering support for peacekeeping missions, and I am pleased that the first day cover highlights this important aspect as well," he concluded.
