Sydney, Jan 18 (NationPress) In northern Sydney, a landslide affected three residences as dangerous flash flooding led to evacuation orders. Residents from the Narrabeen Lagoon vicinity, approximately 19 km north of Sydney's central business district, were notified to evacuate just before 11 p.m. local time on Saturday due to escalating floodwaters triggered by storms that unleashed significant rainfall, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.

On Sunday morning, the State Emergency Service (SES) reported that 25 individuals had been rescued from floodwaters throughout New South Wales, with many rescues occurring in Sydney.

Three homes at Great Mackerel Beach, a remote area on the northern beaches, were affected when heavy rain resulted in a landslide.

The Bureau of Meteorology station at Terrey Hill in the Northern Beaches recorded a staggering 179.6 millimeters of rain in just 24 hours up to 9 a.m. local time on Sunday, far exceeding the 46.6 millimeters noted for the whole of December.

The SES reported responding to over 1,400 incidents, including 743 in the Sydney region, and authorities have cautioned that heavy rainfall is anticipated to persist north of Sydney on Sunday.

Earlier that Saturday, a woman tragically lost her life when a tree fell onto her car south of Sydney amid strong winds and heavy rain impacting Australia's eastern coastline.

Emergency services were alerted to a fallen tree branch on a vehicle around 90 km south of central Sydney shortly before 4 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The woman driving the vehicle died on the spot, while a male passenger sustained minor injuries. Two rear-seat passengers were unharmed, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The east coast state of New South Wales experienced severe thunderstorms on Saturday, leading to flash flooding in northern Sydney and delays at Sydney Airport.

The SES indicated it had received hundreds of assistance requests statewide, and authorities rescued four individuals from floodwaters.

Superintendent Matt Kirby from the emergency service informed the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the severe weather would not subside until Sunday, with heavy rain expected to continue around Sydney and nearby regions to the north and south.

"We urge individuals not to drive through floodwaters and to be cautious about their parking locations, as trees can fall unexpectedly," he stated.

Beaches in Sydney were closed due to risks posed by powerful swells, and police have advised against walking near areas exposed to large waves.
