Gaza, May 4 (NationPress) – A significant gathering of journalists took place in the southern region of Khan Younis, as they passionately called on the international community to ensure the safety of media professionals amid ongoing Israeli aggression.

The demonstration was organized by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate to honor World Press Freedom Day, as reported by Xinhua news agency on Saturday.

At the Nasser Medical Complex, participants displayed placards with the message "Stop Killing Journalists".

During the event, Tahseen Al-Astal, the syndicate's deputy leader, condemned Israel's actions, labeling them a "crime against Palestinian journalists" through direct attacks and destruction of their homes.

Al-Astal described the media landscape in Gaza as one of the "most perilous" globally, citing a total lack of safety measures, obliteration of press organizations, and denial of essential working resources.

According to the syndicate, over 210 Palestinian journalists have lost their lives during the past 17 months of the ongoing Israeli conflict in Gaza, with many more injured or mourning the loss of family, alongside the devastation of media establishments and numerous violations against journalists in the West Bank.

Blaming the Israeli occupation for these atrocities, he urged international bodies to take decisive steps to "hold the perpetrators accountable".

Since the onset of the Gaza conflict on October 7, 2023, reports from the Hamas-affiliated media office indicate that Israeli forces have claimed the lives of 212 journalists, injured 409, and detained 48 others as of Saturday.

The journalist organization also demanded the immediate liberation of all detained journalists and international intervention to hold Israeli officials accountable for their actions against media personnel.

"While the world commemorates press freedom, Palestine suffers from unprecedented assaults on journalism," they remarked.

World Press Freedom Day was established through a UN General Assembly resolution in December 1993 to uphold media independence globally.

This year’s observance arrives during what various media freedom organizations characterize as the deadliest era for journalists in contemporary history, with Palestinian reporters facing the most severe repercussions.

The Israeli military escalated its offensive in Gaza on March 18, breaking a ceasefire and prisoner swap agreement that had been in place since January 19 with the Hamas resistance group.

The brutal Israeli campaign since October 2023 has resulted in the deaths of over 52,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children.

Point of View

I believe the situation in Gaza reflects a critical juncture for media freedom worldwide. The sacrifices of journalists in conflict zones demand our attention and action. Upholding the rights and safety of media personnel is not just a local issue but a matter of global significance. We must advocate for accountability and protection for those who risk everything to bring us the truth.
