New Delhi, Aug 30 (NationPress) India has emerged as Ukraine’s largest diesel supplier, even in the face of a 50% tariff imposed by the US, according to a report released on Saturday.

The report surfaces as the US accuses India of indirectly facilitating Russia’s military actions against Ukraine through its purchases of Russian crude oil.

According to Ukrainian oil market analytics firm NaftoRynok, India accounted for 15.5% of Ukraine’s total diesel imports in July 2025, marking the highest percentage from any single nation.

During July, daily shipments averaged 2,700 tonnes, establishing it as one of India’s most robust export months this year.

From January to July 2025, India’s contribution to Ukraine’s diesel supply surged to 10.2%, a significant increase from just 1.9% in the same timeframe of 2024.

A large portion of the fuel is believed to have reached Ukraine via tankers traveling through the Danube from Romania and through the Opet terminal in Turkey.

Other notable suppliers in July included Slovakia (15%), Greece (13.5%), Turkey (12.4%), and Lithuania (11.4%), as reported.

Analysts from the Ukrainian research firm have pointed out that some of these exports might involve diesel refined from crude of Russian origin, although official data remains undisclosed.

This situation arises amidst escalating trade tensions between India and the US.

President Donald Trump has enacted an executive order imposing 50% tariffs effective from August 27, criticizing ongoing purchases of discounted Russian crude and labeling both India and Russia as 'dead economies.'

Conversely, the Indian government has described these tariffs as 'unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable', pledging to take necessary measures to safeguard its economic interests.

Experts suggest that Russia supplies nearly 10% of global oil, and if India were to cease its purchases, crude prices could escalate to $200 per barrel. They argue that by maintaining oil supplies, India is contributing to market stability and aiding global citizens.

Point of View

India’s emergence as Ukraine’s leading diesel supplier amid US tariffs reflects its strategic economic positioning and resilience in the face of geopolitical challenges. While accusations of supporting Russia linger, India prioritizes its energy security and market stability, showcasing its commitment to global trade.
