Indian National's Death in Russia: Urgent Call for Repatriation of Indians from Conflict Zones
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 14 (NationPress) In response to the tragic news of an Indian national's demise in Russia, India has once again emphasized its call for the swift repatriation of the remaining Indians who are currently engaged with the Russian Army in the conflict areas.
"We have received news regarding the unfortunate passing of an Indian national from Kerala who had seemingly been enlisted to serve in the Russian Army. Another individual from Kerala, who also joined, has sustained injuries and is presently undergoing treatment in a Moscow hospital," stated Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Offering heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the senior diplomat mentioned that the Indian Embassy in Moscow is actively communicating with the families and providing all necessary support.
"We are collaborating with the Russian authorities for the expedited transportation of the mortal remains back to India. We have also requested the prompt discharge and repatriation of the injured individual. This issue has been firmly raised with both the Russian authorities in Moscow and the Russian Embassy in New Delhi today. Furthermore, we have reiterated our appeal for the immediate release of the remaining Indian nationals," he added.
The situation of Indians involved in the conflict for Russia in the Ukraine war remains a significant concern for New Delhi.
India has consistently asserted that the enlistment of Indian nationals in the Russian military amidst a conflict does not align with the diplomatic ties between India and Russia, and has urged for the swift return of all such individuals.
Last year, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's significant visit to Moscow, Russia agreed to facilitate the return of all Indians serving in the Russian army in Ukraine.
This breakthrough was made possible when PM Modi addressed the issue at a private dinner hosted by President Putin.
In recent years, it is estimated that more than two dozen Indians have been coerced into participating in the war against Ukraine after being deceived by agents under the guise of securing high-paying job offers.
"Decisive measures have been initiated against the agents and dishonest individuals who misled them with false promises," confirmed authorities last year.
