Cairo, Oct 7 (NationPress) - Indirect negotiations between delegations from Israel and Hamas began on Monday in Egypt to explore a framework for the exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, as reported by Egypt's state-affiliated Al Qahera News TV.
The discussions, facilitated by Egyptian and Qatari mediators in the Red Sea city of Sharm El Sheikh, aim to lay the groundwork for a potential exchange, according to Xinhua news agency citing Al Qahera News.
Efforts are concentrated on identifying and expanding common ground between Israel and Hamas, as mediators work diligently to establish a mechanism for the release of all detainees in return for prisoners, as per the report.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry indicated that the indirect talks would address field conditions and details related to the exchange of all Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners, aligned with the US-proposed 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan.
On Sunday, sources disclosed to Xinhua that the Hamas delegation had arrived in Egypt to prepare for negotiations with the Egyptian side on Monday in Sharm El Sheikh, where the initial phase of the US plan would be discussed.
Following the Hamas meeting, the Egyptian team is expected to engage in separate discussions with the Israeli delegation. The outcomes from both sets of negotiations will be shared with US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, upon their arrival in Egypt.
An Egyptian security official, who requested anonymity, confirmed the arrival of the Israeli delegation in Egypt, with US mediators anticipated on Tuesday or Wednesday. The negotiations are set to unfold over three days.
As per Palestinian sources, the Hamas delegation is led by senior official Khalil al-Hayya, who is visiting Egypt for the first time since surviving an assassination attempt in Qatar last month to participate in the indirect talks with Israel.
These indirect discussions follow Hamas's recent statement regarding the release of all Israeli hostages captured since October 7, 2023, in line with the US plan. Israeli officials indicate that Hamas retains 48 hostages, of which 20 are believed to be alive. However, Hamas has yet to respond to other stipulations, particularly disarmament, which Israel deems crucial for any ceasefire.
