IDF Reports Iran Launching Missiles Targeting Jerusalem: A Sacred City Under Threat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jerusalem, March 9 (NationPress) The Foreign Ministry of Israel expressed strong condemnation on Monday regarding missile strikes emanating from Iran that are aimed at Jerusalem, labeling them as assaults on locations held sacred by billions around the globe. The Ministry emphasized that these attacks, occurring during the holy month of Ramadan, have targeted some of the city’s most cherished sites.
In a video shared via the social media platform X, the Israeli Foreign Ministry stated, “The Iranian regime is launching missiles towards Jerusalem, a city that holds great significance for billions of believers, during Ramadan. This includes areas above the Western Wall, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.”
Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that missiles were fired from Iran towards Israeli territory, marking a serious escalation in tensions between the two nations.
“The IDF has confirmed that missiles were launched from Iran aimed at the territory of the State of Israel. Our defense systems are activated to counter the threat. Shortly after, the Home Front Command sent out an initial alert directly to mobile devices in the affected areas,” the IDF posted on X.
“We urge the public to act responsibly and follow the issued directives, as they are crucial for saving lives. Individuals should seek shelter upon receiving an alert and remain there until further notice. Exiting the protected area will only be allowed after receiving explicit instructions; continue to adhere to Home Front Command guidelines,” it further stated.
On Sunday, Iran asserted that its right to self-defense would persist until what it referred to as “aggression” from the United States and Israel ceases, or until the United Nations Security Council identifies the “aggressors” under Article 39 of the UN Charter and addresses the responsibilities arising from their actions.
In a statement from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tehran claimed that the joint military operations conducted by the US and Israel began on February 28, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian officials.
The statement indicated that these attacks have continued, targeting both military and civilian infrastructures throughout the nation.
The Ministry described these actions as a “blatant violation of Iran's territorial integrity and national sovereignty,” asserting that they contravene essential principles of international law.
Iran reiterated that responding to what it termed “merciless military aggression” is its “inherent right to self-defense,” citing Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
“The exercise of Iran's inherent right to legitimate self-defense will persist until the aggression concludes, or until the UN Security Council fulfills its obligations under Article 39 of the UN Charter by identifying and naming the aggressors and determining the responsibilities arising from their actions,” the statement concluded.
