Jerusalem, Sep 8 (NationPress) An Israeli official has disclosed that Israel is actively evaluating a ceasefire proposal from the United States regarding the ongoing situation in Gaza, which includes provisions for the release of Israeli hostages. The official, who requested anonymity, indicated that the plan was communicated to Hamas over the weekend and is referred to as “President Donald Trump’s proposal,” as reported by Xinhua news agency.
According to Israel's Channel 12, the proposal entails Israel halting its military efforts to seize Gaza City. On the first day of the ceasefire, all 48 hostages currently in Gaza—approximately 20 of whom are believed to be alive—would be released in exchange for a significant number of Palestinian prisoners. Subsequent negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict would commence under Trump’s mediation, with the ceasefire remaining effective during these discussions.
In a statement issued late on Sunday, Hamas acknowledged receipt of various US proposals and expressed readiness to “immediately engage in negotiations” regarding the release of all captives in exchange for “a definitive declaration to end the war, a complete withdrawal from Gaza, and the establishment of a committee to govern the Gaza Strip with independent Palestinians assuming their roles without delay.”
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which advocates for the families of those held in Gaza, has called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to endorse the proposed agreement. “We urge the Israeli government to publicly declare its unconditional support for the evolving deal,” the group stated.
Netanyahu has not yet addressed previous mediator proposals for a partial agreement that Hamas had agreed to last month.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump remarked, “The Israelis have accepted my terms. It is now time for Hamas to agree as well,” cautioning that non-compliance would lead to repercussions.
Since resuming military operations in Gaza on March 18, Israel has faced significant casualties, with Gaza health authorities reporting at least 11,911 Palestinian deaths and 50,735 injuries. The total death toll since October 2023 has reached 64,455, with 162,776 individuals injured.
