Rome, June 20 (NationPress) Italy will continue to operate its embassies in both Tehran and Tel Aviv during the current conflict between Iran and Israel. This decision comes as the government organizes charter flights to aid Italian citizens looking to depart from the two nations, according to Antonio Tajani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
"We are actively working to assist our fellow citizens who wish to leave Iran and Israel," Tajani shared with Italy's ANSA news agency while attending a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Taormina, Sicily.
As per official reports, approximately 20,000 Italian nationals are in Israel, while around 450 are located in Iran, as noted by Xinhua news agency.
The ministry has confirmed that these special flights will cater to Italian citizens, their family members, and other EU nationals. While the passengers will bear the travel costs, the government will subsidize 500 euros (about $573) per adult.
Tajani emphasized that Italian diplomatic missions in both regions have remained functional since hostilities escalated on June 13, when Israel initiated a significant military campaign against Iran. "Our embassies are operating under extremely challenging conditions. We are committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens," he remarked.
He further mentioned that the Italian government has not received any indications of U.S. military bases in Italy being involved in supporting Israeli military operations.
