Dhaka, Oct 8 (NationPress) With the February 2026 elections on the horizon in Bangladesh, the radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami urged the Election Commission on Monday to make a clear decision regarding the announcement of the election schedule. They emphasized that “time is running out to organize the polls before the upcoming Ramadan,” as reported by local media.
The comments were made after a meeting between the Jamaat delegation, led by Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin along with the four election commissioners at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.
“The time for announcing the schedule is limited. We have raised this issue to understand the Election Commission's definitive announcement and specific decision regarding this matter,” Parwar stated according to Bangladeshi media outlet UNB.
He further noted that the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, alongside political parties and other stakeholders, is committed to conducting the election prior to the upcoming Ramadan as per the established election timeline.
As per Parwar, the Election Commission assured the delegation that the election schedule would be declared within this week, confirming they had reached a decision.
When asked about the potential for an election delay, Parwar responded, “We currently have no concerns. They have assured us of their decision. We choose to trust their word and believe they will follow through.”
Additionally, the Election Commission has instructed Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar to prepare to record the CEC's address on December 10, which is anticipated to outline the February 2026 election schedule and referendum, local media reported.
Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed of the Election Commission shared this information while addressing reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka on Monday.
“Letters have already been dispatched to BTV and Bangladesh Betar by the Election Commission,” quoted The Daily Star.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman El Mashud stated, “The schedule will be unveiled through a speech on BTV and Bangladesh Betar, possibly on December 10. Time is of the essence—the schedule must be announced by December 11.”
Bangladesh is grappling with increasing political instability and uncertainty as the next election approaches, with political factions frequently clashing over reform proposals.
