Jeju Air to Reduce 188 International Flights from Busan Following Tragic Crash

Seoul, Jan 7 (NationPress) Jeju Air, the low-cost carrier currently facing significant scrutiny following a recent aircraft accident that resulted in the loss of 179 lives, stated on Tuesday that it intends to cut 188 international flights departing from Busan in the first quarter, with a total operational reduction plan expected to be finalized this week.
In the wake of the tragic crash on December 29, Jeju Air disclosed plans to reduce flight operations by 10-15 percent by March to bolster operational safety, as reported by the YOnhap news agency.
As per the airline's announcement, flights from Busan, located in South Korea's southeastern region, to Clark in the Philippines will be canceled from January 22 to March 30, resulting in a cancellation of 78 flights.
Furthermore, flights from Busan to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, will be suspended from February 3 to March 29, leading to a reduction of 110 flights.
The overall reduction strategy for the January-March period, which includes measures to cut flights on routes departing from Incheon, the country’s primary international airport, is anticipated to be finalized this week.
Industry analysts expect the total reduction to reach approximately 1,900 flights during this quarter.
Meanwhile, the government has pledged to provide full support to the families of the 179 victims of the unfortunate Jeju Air crash, as funeral arrangements are nearing completion.
As of Monday, the remains of all victims have been returned to their families. The Jeju Air Boeing 737-800, which was carrying 181 passengers and crew members, tragically crashed at Muan International Airport, leaving only two survivors.
Psychological support teams have been deployed to assist in the emotional recovery of the bereaved families and those involved in the response to the incident. Emergency living expenses for the victims' families are set to begin distribution on Friday. Additionally, the Financial Services Commission will provide relief by extending loan maturities for the affected families.
