Colombo, Nov 29 (NationPress) Two MI-17V5 helicopters from the Indian Air Force (IAF) arrived in Sri Lanka on Saturday evening to enhance the ongoing Search and Rescue (SAR) operations as the island grapples with widespread flooding, landslides, and significant disruptions to essential services across several districts.
The IAF helicopters delivered crucial Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) supplies alongside personnel to support the relief efforts in Sri Lanka as India’s ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ accelerated, promptly addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the neighboring nation.
The helicopters are set to collaborate closely with Sri Lankan authorities in search and rescue missions, as stated by the Indian High Commission in Colombo.
Additionally, two Chetak helicopters have joined the INS Vikrant, currently stationed in Colombo for the International Fleet Review 2025 (IFR), to assist the Lankan Air Force with ongoing search and rescue operations, as India maintains its close partnership with Sri Lanka in providing relief amidst extensive devastation across the island.
Heron UAVs from the INS Vikrant are also being utilized in these operations.
On Saturday, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake proclaimed a State of Public Emergency effective immediately under the Public Security Ordinance.
Local media reported that Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe indicated that the Extraordinary Gazette aims to safeguard public safety while ensuring a swift disaster response, as the island faces what could be one of its worst weather-related crises, with widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage affecting thousands nationwide.
Samarasinghe noted that nearly all regions of the country have been impacted by the adverse weather conditions.
As Sri Lanka continues to deal with the severe aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirmed that the death toll has risen to 123 over recent days, as reported by local media on Saturday.
In response, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka has established an ‘Emergency Help Desk’ at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo to offer necessary assistance, including food and water, to passengers in need.
“Any Indian passenger needing help may contact the emergency number,” the High Commission mentioned in a post on X along with further contact details.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath on Saturday expressed heartfelt thanks to India for the humanitarian aid extended to the island under ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ following Cyclone Ditwah.
“Thank you, my friend, S. Jaishankar, for the support during this trying time,” Herath posted on X.
Former Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mohamed Uvais Mohamed Ali Sabry also expressed gratitude to India for the prompt cyclone relief.
“Thank you, India, for the immediate cyclone relief delivered under Operation Sagar Bandhu. Sri Lanka remembers with appreciation the vital support provided during the 2022 economic crisis. Your friendship continues to make a significant difference,” Sabry posted on X.
In continuation of India’s humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka under Operation Sagar Bandhu, an Indian Air Force aircraft carrying approximately 12 tonnes of humanitarian aid, which includes tents, tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene kits, and ready-to-eat food items, landed in Colombo on Saturday following Cyclone Ditwah, which has claimed numerous lives and affected thousands.
The Indian Air Force promptly dispatched one C-130 and one IL-76 from Hindon Air Base in the early hours of Saturday, transporting 21 tonnes of relief materials along with over 80 NDRF personnel and eight tonnes of equipment to Colombo. Essential rations and critical supplies have been delivered to aid the affected communities.
“In this challenging time, India stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka. Guided by its unwavering commitment to the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, India remains fully dedicated to supporting Sri Lanka during this difficult period. Further assistance will be coordinated in consultation with the Sri Lankan government as the situation develops,” stated a message from the Indian High Commission in Colombo.
