Gyeongju (South Korea), Nov 1 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced on Saturday that Seoul will persist in implementing preemptive measures aimed at alleviating military tensions and fostering trust with North Korea to enhance peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Lee delivered these remarks during the closing ceremony of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in the southeastern city of Gyeongju.
He stated, "Military confrontations, tensions, and nuclear challenges have hindered stability and collaboration not only on the Korean Peninsula but throughout the entire Asia-Pacific region."
"The Republic of Korea strives to initiate a new chapter on the Korean Peninsula through peaceful coexistence and co-prosperity, guided by the principle of addressing issues through dialogue," he continued, referencing South Korea's official name.
Lee further noted that South Korea has already initiated preemptive actions to diminish military tensions and rebuild trust between the two Koreas, vowing to undertake even more proactive efforts to promote peace, according to the Yonhap news agency.
He underscored that peace is the fundamental basis for a sustainable future in the Asia-Pacific region, urging support from APEC members for Seoul's peace-promoting endeavors.
"Peace on the Korean Peninsula is a vital condition for the prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region," Lee asserted.
"The journey towards peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula can be achieved with the backing and collaboration of all APEC members."
During the closing ceremony, Lee officially transferred the APEC chairmanship to Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose nation will host the next summit in Shenzhen.
