Rio de Janeiro, July 8 (NationPress) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has condemned foreign intervention in Brazil's internal matters following comments from US President Donald Trump, who urged Brazilian officials to halt the prosecution of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is currently facing trial for allegedly attempting a coup.
"Upholding Brazil's democracy is a matter for Brazilians alone. We are a sovereign nation; we reject interference or oversight from any external party. Our institutions are robust and independent. No one stands above the law, especially those who threaten freedom and the rule of law," Lula stated, according to Xinhua news agency.
Bolsonaro, who was Brazil's president from 2019 to 2022, faces allegations of plotting to retain power through violence after his defeat to Lula in the re-election.
Tensions in US-Brazil relations escalated on Monday after Trump criticized Bolsonaro's coup trial.
The US President accused Brazilian authorities of conducting a "witch hunt" against Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro, a former military officer, was Brazil's 38th president from 2019 to 2023 and previously served in Brazil's Chamber of Deputies from 1991 to 2019.
He lost to Lula da Silva in the 2022 general election runoff.
In January 2023, Bolsonaro's supporters stormed federal government buildings, demanding a coup d'état—an unlawful attempt to overthrow the current leadership.
Consequently, the Superior Electoral Court barred Bolsonaro from holding office until 2030 for undermining election validity and for abusing power through government communication channels. The Superior Electoral Court is the highest judicial entity in the Brazilian Electoral Justice system.
In 2024, Bolsonaro was officially charged by the Federal Police with multiple offenses related to the alleged coup.
In February 2025, he was charged, and Brazil's Supreme Court ruled that he must stand trial.
