Yangon, July 6 (NationPress) In the initial six months of 2025, 28 individuals lost their lives and 219 were injured in 94 traffic incidents occurring on Myanmar's Yangon-Mandalay highway, as reported by the highway traffic police on Sunday.
This represents a decline in both accidents and fatalities compared to the same timeframe last year, which recorded 99 accidents resulting in 52 fatalities, according to an official statement from the highway traffic police force to Xinhua.
The majority of these incidents were attributed to excessive speed, the official noted. The damage resulting from these accidents exceeded 400 million kyats (approximately 190,476 U.S. dollars).
In 2024, there were a total of 203 accidents reported on the highway, resulting in 88 deaths and 360 injuries, the official elaborated.
Last month, on May 29, Xinhua highlighted that 20 people were killed and 159 injured in 58 accidents on the Yangon-Mandalay highway between January and April of this year, based on a report from the Road Transport Administration Department.
The statistics show a decrease in traffic incidents and deaths this year compared to the previous year, which counted 59 accidents leading to 33 fatalities.
Moreover, on Thursday, Myanmar Radio and Television reported that human errors and vehicle issues, such as tire blowouts during hot weather, were the primary causes of highway accidents.
The 587-km expressway links Yangon, the commercial capital, to Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar.
Additionally, 11 individuals were reported dead and 66 injured in 26 accidents on the same highway within the first two months of this year, according to the highway traffic police on March 18.
In the corresponding period last year, 30 accidents took place on the highway, resulting in 23 fatalities, as per the highway traffic police's report to Xinhua.
The main factors contributing to traffic accidents in Myanmar include reckless driving, vehicle malfunctions, and adverse road and weather conditions.
